As we are preparing for the new year, yea 2012 baby! We are excited about embarking on new adventures. I decided to create a new youtube page ATON Answers that is all about answering your questions in regards to natural hair, skin and healthy insides. This page is different from my other youtube page which is primarily for how to style natural hair How To Styling . So, I created a video recently that answers the question of how to use Natty Butter and Natty Moist, two products that are available on my site Natty Products . I mainly get the questions, 'what is the difference' and 'how to use each one'. So, this video explains the details and I hope you enjoy.

Let's Talk Hair: EMOLLIENTS For Shiny Hair

Ok, so we all are or have been in a search for the latest greatest product that promises to do something that many of us wish to have..Achieve healthy and shiny hair. Well, we ask the question..what is that makes hair so shiny? Why are some tresses more shiny than others?

Well, here's the skinny on hair and dryness. Curly, Kinky or Coily hair texture tends to be dryer although all scalps produce the same amount of oil. The reason straight hair and wavy hair looks shinier is that due to the straighter texture, it is easier for the oils to spiral down the hair strand, whereas with curlier hair, the oils do not make it down the strand of the hair. Whew..so now that we've gotten that out of the way. There are ways to keep curlier hair moisturized: deep conditioners, using sulfate free shampoos, cool water and apple cider vinegar rinses, etc. Ok, yea, that's all fine, but how do I get my hair to  not only feel moisturized, but 'look' shiny as well? Hmmm...very good question, so let's delve into how to get the hair to not only feel but look shiny too!!!

EMOLLIENTS...WHAT ARE THEY?

• Emollients are commonly referred to as ingredients that soften or treat dry skin. They are usually forms of oil or grease. And they work by increasing the skin and hair's ability to hold water. Now, water is the absolute best and truest moisturizer, but because it evaporates quickly, it can be ineffective once the hair dries. This is where other emollients come in to play. Water, because it evaporates quickly, needs to be held on the skin or hair by emollient oils in what is called emulsion. 

EMOLLIENTS..SYNTHETIC 

Synthetic emollients are occlusive i.e. they coat the skin and do not allow it to respire (much like plastic wrap), which can cause skin irritation. So, basically they coat the hair, but do not allow moisture to penetrate which in turn causes dryness and many times frizziness, once the emollient is removed. Some synthetic emollients can accumulate in the liver and lymph nodes. They are also non-biodegradable, causing a negative environmental impact. 

Types of Synthetic Emollients

• PEG compounds (eg PEG- 45 Almond Glyceride) may contain the toxic by-product dioxane 
• Synthetic alcohols (anything that contains the phrase benzyl –, butyl-, cetearyl-, cetyl -, glyceryl-, isopropyl-, myristyl propyl-, propylene-, or stearyl-) eg Isopropyl Palmitate, Diglyceryl Caprylate) have been shown to cause allergies and dermatitis. 
• Hydrocarbons (eg mineral oil, petrolatum, paraffin) contain carcinogenic and mutagenic Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) and can cause chemically induced acne. 
• Silicone Oils (eg dimethicone, cyclomethicone, copolyol) can clog the skin like plastic wrap and cause tumours when painted on lab animals (according to the Material Safety Data Sheet supplied by the manufacturer).

NATURAL EMOLLIENTS..

Natural emollients actually nourish the skin and care for it. They are metabolised by the skin’s own enzymes and absorbed into it. They are readily biodegradable and are of edible quality.

If you all follow me on my youtube  or my  Facebook you may have heard me say that I use a either water or a water based moisturizer first, then seal using my O'Natural Natty Butter for sealing in the moisture and providing sheen. Or I will melt my butter down to an oil form for an after styling sheen. I love the Natty Butter because it contains a lot of the natural emollients listed above and works wonders for the health and shine of my hair. You can select any of the following natural emollients, mix them together and apply to your hair for a wonderful after style sheen..


So, bottom line, curly hair is not naturally shiny due to the texture and the inability of the natural oils to flow down the hair follicle..so we have to help the hair out by first adding moisture to it (water based moisturizer) and then holding the moisture in (adding a butter or oil based sealer).

Let's Talk Hair: My Regimen for FRIZZ FREE Hair That Lasts

As of today, my twist out is 6 days old

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone..

So, today I am going to quickly cover how I keep my hair moist, yet frizz free, during these hot and humid summer months.. I have been receiving a lot of emails in regards to my regimen and keeping these coils tight and controlled during this heat wave. So, for all that have inquired..thank you and I am happy to share what works for me. Now, I have oobbber thick and coarse hair, so results may vary..please keep that in mind, but if you use products that contain anti humectants, then you are definitely on a path to great 'frizz free' hair. And if you haven't already, please see my post on 'Humectants and Anti Humectants'.

My Hot Weather Regimen:

• I co-wash using my Natty Moist Conditioner (weekly). I actually have not co-washed since Saturday due to my extremely busy schedule, so I'm operating on a 6 day twist out as of today..the pic above was taken yesterday, so that's how my 5 day twist out is looking.I always do a final rinse using ACV rinse or I spray my hair after washing with my Natty ACV Hair and Scalp mist to help close the cuticle and minimize frizz.
• Style using  either my Natty ACV Hair and Scalp Mist to dampen my hair or my Natty Moist as my deep conditioner and as my leave in and moisture styler...
• O'Natural Natty Butter..I love love love this product because it is an anti humectant, but the properties still allow moisture to penetrate my hair follicle without causing my hair to swell and frizz..So, I am getting my H2O and sealing it in at the same time.. So, bottom line, my hair is moisturized and the moisture doesn't escape.
• Retwist. I retwist every other night or every 2 nights in medium to large sized twists..I do this because I want a little fullness that I wouldn't necessarily achieve if I retwist every night..Because I try to moisturize my hair so well, I don't need to apply it every time I re twist. So, I may use my Natty Moist or ACV Mist and Natty Butter on day 3 of my twist out..I'm telling ya, this stuff packs a heck of a moisture punch.
• Protect: I protect my hair by either sleeping on a satin pillow or cover my head with a satin bonnet. But I ALWAYS protect my tresses at night.
• Take Down: I use a tiny tiny bit of my Natty Butter when I take down, and this is only if my hair feels as if it needs it or if I am going to be in the hot humid weather for a long period of time..Remember, it is an anti humectant. Learn to know your hair and when it needs moisture and when it doesn't because too much of the Natty Butter can cause greasiness...you don't want that.. You want moisture, not grease head!!

So, that's it guys, my regimen to combat this weather and stay frizz free, yet moisturized. No, you do not have to use the exact products that I use, just be sure to read your labels and look for the proper ingredients to combat the enemy of frizziness..I hope this helps and hit me on Facebook or leave a comment for any questions, comments or tips..But keep in mind, keep the hair moisturized moisturized moisturized in these hot summer months...
