Let's Talk Skin, Hair, Health: O'Natural With DERMATITIS

Greetings Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone.
So, this is going to be a bit of important reading. But, I felt this needed to be touched upon because unfortunately so many women, men and children suffer from some form of Dermatitis. And I have received many emails in regards to what to do about it..naturally. I mean, let's be honest, we all love our hair, skin and insides and it bothers us if we are ambushed with issues that affect any of these. So, although I don't struggle with any form of Dermatitis, I feel extremely empathetic and would like to try to shed some light as to how to attempt to manage it and feel happy with ourselves naturally.

So, what exactly is DERMATITIS?

Dermatitis is a basic term for any type of inflammation of the skin. There are a few types of Dermatitis.

Types of DERMATITIS..
  • Atopic Dermatitis
  • Nummular Dermatitis
  • Seborrheic Dermatitis
  • Irritant Contact Dermatits
  • Allergic Dermatitis

DERMATITIS VS. ECZEMA

The distinction between the use of dermatitis and eczema to describe skin disorders can be confusing. Many people use the term 'eczema' to refer specifically to Atopic Dermatitis.  Eczema is the inflammation of the skin that accompanies dermatitis produces scaling, flaking, thickening, weeping, crusting, color changes and often itching.

So..What Causes DERMATITIS??
  • Allergies/Irritants: Many cases of Dermatitis are simply the result of allergies (Allergic or Contact Dermatitis).
                1. perfumes
                2. cosmetics
                3. rubber
                4. medicated creams/ointments
                5. latex
                6. poison ivy
                7. metals or metal alloys such as gold, silver and nickel in jewelry and zippers
                8. sunlight (many people with dermatitis are sensitive to sunlight)
  • Atopic Dermatitis: (eczema or infantile eczema, found in children)
This type of Dermatitis is a condition known to affect allergy prone individuals. It typically appears on the face, in the bends of elbows and behind the knees and is very itchy. If other family members have histories of hay fever, asthma, or atopic dermatitis, it is more likely that a child will be diagnosed with atopic dermatitis.
                Triggers of this may be:
                  1. cold or hot weather
                  2. dry atmosphere
                  3. allergen exposures
                  4. stress
                  5. Infections, such as colds
  • Nummular Dermatitis:
This type of Dermatitis is coin shaped. It is a chronic condition in which round, scaling lesions appear on the limbs (arms, legs, etc) or scalp, face and chest (seborrhea).
                 Triggers of this may be:
                   1. Allergy to nickel (often associated with dry skin)
                   2. Intestinal and immune disorders (dermatitis herpetiformis). Very itchy form of dermatitis.
                   3. Dairy and/or Gluten products
  • Seborrhea: Characterized by scaly patches of skin that result from a disorder of the sebaceous (oil producing) glands. Most often occurs on the scalp, face and chest, but can appear on other parts of the body. It may or may not be itchy. Usually yellowish and/or greasy or dry and flaky. This form is most common is infancy (cradle cap) and middle age. The exact cause is not known, but may be linked to nutritional deficiencies (especially a lack of biotin and Vitamin A) or the effects of a yeast organism which normally lives in the hair follicles. Heredity and climate can also play a role. Adult Seborrheic dermatitis is often associated with stress and anxiety. Other factors: infrequent shampooing or cleansing, oily skin, obesity, Parkinson's Disease and psoriasis.

Herbs That Have Been Known To Help DERMATITIS..
  • Blackthorn, blueberry leaf, hawthorne berry and rue (contains flavanoids that are excellent for reducing inflammation.
  • Chamomile (can be taken internally or used to soothe the skin. Reduces inflammation)
  • Dandelion, Yellow Dock Root, Chaparral can be combined and made into a poultice or paste
  • Dandelion, Goldenseal, Myrrh, Pau d' Arco and Red Clover can be combined to make a tea (don't take Goldenseal on a daily basis for more than one week at a time..do not use during pregnancy)
  • Goldenseal Root Powder and Vitamin E and add a little honey until it is the consistency of a loose paste. Apply to affected area to relieve itching and promote healing.
  • Gotu Kola
  • Grapeseed Extract
  • Oregon Grape Root (detoxifies the body and reduces inflammation)
  • Wild Pansy (excellent for psoriasis, acne, eczema and cradle cap in infants)
  • Colloidal Silver is a natural antibiotic that has been known to fight seborrhea
What to eat..What to avoid eating..What to Use for DERMATITIS..
  • Brown Rice
  • Avoid eggs, peanuts, soy foods, wheat and dairy products
  • Avoid sugar, strawberries, chocolate, white flour, fats, fried foods and processed foods
  • Try a gluten free diet for 6 weeks, then add back into diet one at a time and see if the condition changes..(Gluten free foods will specifically say 'Gluten Free')
  • Try not to eat foods containing raw eggs (which contain avidin, a protein that binds to biotin and prevents it from being absorbed) Biotin is needed for skin and scalp disorders.
  • Keep your house humidified and keep skin hydrated
  • For seborrhic dermatitis: Make a strong concentrated tea of Rosemary, Comfrey, Tea Tree Oil (add this once tea is made), Dried Nettles and Witch Hazel, and apply it to the scalp after shampooing or cowashing with a fragrance free cleanser. Leave it on the scalp for 10 or 15 minutes. Rinse
  • Massage Tea Tree Oil mixed with a carrier oil (Jojoba, Argan, Grapeseed, etc) after contact with water or irritants
  • Keep the colon clean. Use fiber supplements such as flaxseed, psyllium husk or Aerobic Bulk Cleanse
  • Evening Primrose Oil and Vitamin B6 have been known to help.
  • Emu Oil
  • Try to change to hair products without chemicals: Ayurvedic shampoo bars are excellent, or all natural cleansers
  • Try to avoid over the counter ointments, this can cause an overload on the skin
  • Follow a fasting program once per month ( I love the Master Cleanse www.themastercleanse.com )

Whew, I know that was a lot, but again, it is a serious subject and it's better to equip yourselves with as much knowledge as possible.
Let me make clear, I am not a doctor, nor am I in the medical profession so before any treatment recommended, see your homeopath or naturalist for medical advice.

So What's The Rave About: MARSHMALLOW ROOT

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone.
So, let's talk about overall health and the O'So healthy herb, Marshmallow Root. If you are familiar with natural herbs, then you may have heard of Marshmallow Root..No, it is not the same substance made from geletan and sugar that you roast over a fire on a stick; although the sugary marshmallows eaten as the sticky sweet were once made from the Althaea officinalis (Marshmallow Root) plant. This herb has so many wonderful benefits, not only for hair, but for skin and our insides as well. So, let's just take a look and see What's The Rave About Marshmallow Root.

MARSHMALLOW ROOT..THE INTERNAL EDITION:
  • Diuretic: Aids the body in expelling excess fluid and mucus.
  • Respiratory Infections: Excellent herbal remedy when used as a tea to aid in eliminating respiratory infections, such as: bronchitis, whooping cough, laryngitis, tonsillitis, dry cough and emphysema. You can also use a Marshmallow tea mixture to reduce hoarseness of the throat and other throat infections.Marshmallow root contains mucilate, a substance that becomes slippery when wet. This trait gives the marshmallow plant the ability to treat irritation in the mouth, throat and stomach. Prep: Boil 25 Grams of Marshmallow root to 1 liter of water steep for 15-20 minutes. Drink 2-3 cups daily, can mix with orange flower water or orange juice and honey for flavor.
  • Stomach Issues: Used to cure Acid Reflux, Peptic Ulcer and Gastritis, Constipation, Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Colitis.
  • Urinary Tract Infections: Marshmallow root has been used for centuries in aiding in curing Urinary Tract Infections, Kidney Problems and Kidney Stones.
  • Weight Loss: Because marshmallow root swells when mixed with fluids, ingesting it as a diet supplement causes the stomach to feel fuller.
  • Teething: A marshmallow root can be peeled and given to infants to chew on. This reduces the pain and irritation associated with teething.

MARSHMALLOW ROOT..THE SKIN EDITION:
  • Marshmallow Root can be made into a poultice and used to treat skin infections such as; eczema, psoriasis and pinkeye. Because marshmallow root has anti-inflammatory activity on the human tissue it has been proven helpful in treating cuts, scrapes, and other wounds. Prep: Mix enough Marshmallow Root powder to warm water to make a thick paste and apply to skin as needed.

MARSHMALLOW ROOT..THE HAIR EDITION:
  • As a natural emollient (moisturizer), it works wonders when used as a deep treatment or deep conditioning Ayurvedic mask for hair and scalp.
  • Marshmallow is a medicated, conditioning, mucilaginous herb that
provides an abundance of ’slip’ which helps to nourish and detangle naturally curly hair.

Marshmallow Root Herbal Spritz: 1/3 Aloe Vera Gel/Juice, 2 TBSP Hibiscus Petal Powder, 2 TBSP Marshmallow Root Powder, 1 1/4 Cups Distilled (Filtered) Water. Prep: Bring distilled water to a boil, then let cool slightly. Add Hibiscus Petal Powder and Marshmallow root to water, and allow to steep for 30 minutes. Strain mixture through cheesecloth, and add Aloe Vera Gel to liquid. Pour mixture in a spray bottle, and store in refrigerator for up to one week, use as often as needed. Marshmallow Root has a strong smell, so I like to add lavender or lemongrass to help with the smell.

Marshmallow Root Deep Conditioning Treatment: 1/4 cup Natty Moist Conditioner (or any natural conditioner you favor), 1/4 cup of Extra Virgin Coconut Oil, 2 TBSP Hibiscus Petal Powder, 2 TBSP Brahmi Powder, 2 TBSP Bhringraj and 1 TBSP Marshmallow Root Powder. Prep: In a medium size bowl, mix all ingredients together and use immediately. Gently section your hair, and use an applicator brush to generously apply the mixture starting at the scalp, and working your way down the hair shaft. Cover with a plastic cap and allow mixture to sit on head for about 45minutes-hour.

Marshmallow Root Clarifying Treatment: 1/2 Cup Bentonite Clay Powder, 2 TBSP Marshmallow Root Powder, 1/4 Cup Aloe Vera Gel/Juice, 1/4 cup Apple Cider Vinegar. Prep: Mix ingredients into a cake batter consistency and apply to damp hair. Leave on for 15-20 minutes and do not allow to dry. Rinse with lukewarm to cool water.

How to Give a Productive Scalp Massage *10*

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well and healthy with everyone.

Well, I know many of us, if not most of us, have heard of 'scalp massages'. We've heard countless tales of how scalp massages can do this and do that. But how many of us truly understand the proper way to massage our scalp that promotes the benefits that we have sooo many times heard of?? Well, this video was an excellent explanation of how to massage our scalps the correct way. in this video, Kaya also explains the benefits of the scalp massage. So, I truly hope you guys enjoy..

SCALP MASSAGE...THE BENEFITS
  • Reduces Stress Levels: General tension and stress can inhibit blood flow to your head causing headaches, eye-strain, poor concentration, hair loss, depression and other symptoms. A soothing head and scalp massage provides instant relief.
  • Relieves headaches
  • Increases blood flow: This is especially helpful with scalp massage, because it doesn't just benefit the skin and scalp itself, but also the hair follicles and hair. This increased blood flow can stimulate the follicles in such a way that hair will grow faster, which is a great benefit for those who wish to increase the length of their locks. Scalp massage can also strengthen hair follicles which, in turn, strengthens the entire hair shaft. Often this type of massage is accompanied by special oils that are applied to the scalp and hair to provide increased nourishment and work with the hair's natural oils to repair dryness and breakage. This is great for massage or hair clients who suffer from chronic flaking and itching caused by a dry scalp. The special scalp oils may also be scented with either a relaxing mix of aromatic herbs or something more stimulating for those looking for an energy boost.
  • Relaxation: Conduct a scalp massage with hair oil before going off to sleep. This will help relax the mind and achieve sound sleep.

Great Carrier and Essential Oil Blends for Scalp Massage:

  • Dandruff and Dry Scalp: Jojoba, Tea Tree, Neem, Avacado and Vitamin E oils (per 4 oz bottle, add 2oz of Jojoba and 2 oz of Avacado Carrier Oils. Add 5 drops of Tee Tree, Neem and Vitamin E oils, warm or apply room temperature. Massage. Enjoy)
  • Peaceful Sleep: Grapeseed, Jojoba, Sandalwood, Lavender, Chamomile oils (per 4 oz. bottle, add 2 oz of Grapeseed Oil and 2 oz. Jojoba Oil. Add 5 drops of Lavender, Sandalwood and Chamomile Oils. Apply warm or at room temperature. Massage. Enjoy)
  • Stimulating Scalp Massage: Jojoba, Sweet Almond, Peppermint, Sweet Orange, Vitamin E oils. {per 4oz bottle, combine 2 oz. Jojoba and 2 oz Sweet Almond oils. Add 5 drops of Peppermint, Sweet Orange and Vitamin E oils. Apply warm or at room temperature. Massage. Enjoy)

My Product Is All Natural...I THINK!!

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone..
So, let's get right down to the nitty gritty!!! This is about shedding some light on natural products and products that appear to be 'O'Natural. I have been doing some research on ingredients to find out the real truth about them so that I can furthur know what I am putting on my hair, on my skin which in turn can travel throughout  my body. Hmmm, so why is this necessarily important..well, glad you asked, since the CDC is out of control with new cases of cancer and health related issues, many of the chemicals that are found in beauty products are not necessarily regulated so they are not monitored as closely as other things, such as food and medicine. And facts have shown that many of the harsh chemicals found in shampoos, conditioners, stylers and skin care products have been linked to asthma, cancer, eczema, psoriasis, dandruff and so on.

Fortunately, there is a very simple way to differentiate between the hype and the truth in skin care and that is to read the ingredient list on the label. It's a legal requirement that all skin care products, natural or otherwise, must be labelled with the ingredients in descending order of their quantity in the product. A good rule of thumb is to divide the ingredient list into thirds: the top third usually contains 90-95% of the product, the middle third usually contains 5-8% and the bottom third, 1-3%.
So, because I find it extremely important, I felt it extremely important to equip each one of you with the same knowledge..so here goes!!

The  SO-CALLED NATURAL List...

Natural or Organic ingredients include
1 Water (deionised)
2 Isopropyl Palmitate (Palm Oil Derivative) derived from Isopropyl Alcohol which is a synthetic drying alcohol.
3 Apricot Kernel Oil (Take not that this is 3rd on the list, which means that this particular product is mostly water and Isopropyl Palmitate)
4 Bis-Digyceryl Caprylate/Caprate/Isosterate/Stearate/ Hydroxysterate Adipate (vegetable Triglyceride)
5 Glyceryl Stearate SE (vegetable derived)
6 Caprylic/Capric Triglyceride (glycerin-derived emollient)
7 Ceteareth - 12 (Organic Emulsifier)
8 Tocopherol Oil (vitamin E)
9 Chamomile Extract
10 Sage Extract
11 Linden Extract (Lime Blossom Extract)
12 Balm Mint Extract
13 Shea Butter (From Karite)
14 Wheat Germ Oil
15 Carrot Oil
16 Cetyl Alcohol (organic Co-emulsifier)
17 Sodium Hydroxide (pH Adjuster)
18 Sorbic Acid (Organic Compound)
19 Tocopherol Acetate (vitamin E Derivative)
20 Methyl Paraben
21 Propyl Paraben
22 Imidazolidinyl Urea (Organic Compound)
23 Fragrance
24 FD & C Yellow No 5, D7C Red No. 33.
Content: Apricot oil (2.5%)

Important Info About the List Above:
  • #5 & 6 are largely synthetic..synthetic glycerin to be exact. These ingredients have been known to cause dermatitis and cause allergies.
  • #7 is a synthetic emulsifier. Both are known carcinogens.
  • #8-15 are actual natural ingredients. However, they are so far down on the list that the quantities are extremely minimal. And many times, this is to make the product look good.
  • #17 Is otherwise known as caustic soda or lye - a powerful drain cleaner extremely alkaline and corrosive. A known sensitizer for many people with sensitive skin.
  • #18 Sorbic acid was once isolated from the Mountain Ash berry, but is now chemically synthesised and is a toxic preservative. No longer natural!
  • #19 is synthetic Vitamin E
  • #20-22 are toxic and allergenic preservatives which have been linked to increasing oestrogen levels in women and is implicated in the rising incidence of breast cancer.
  • #23 Probably synthetic, may contain phthalates that have been linked to birth defects. Phthalates are toxic gender bending chemicals found in virtually everyone tested for them. It is certainly not natural to have phthalates in your body or on your skin I can assure you. I know some of you love love love those smell good poos and conditioners..but try to look for ingredients that include essential oils for fragrance
  • #24 Synthetic colours that could be potentially carcinogenic. So those pink and blue poos and conditioners, moisturizers and stylers.

The TRUE NATURAL List..

CERTIFIED ORGANIC NATURAL BODY INTENSIVE
1 Organic Aloe Vera
2 Organic Safflower oil
3 Purified Water

9 Lime
10 D-Panthenol (pro-vit b5)
11 Olive extract
12 Grapefruit extract
13 Sclerotium gum
14 Organic orange

Let's Talk Hair: The Benefits of TEA RINSES

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone
Ok, so let's talk hair..We are always striving and searching for the greatest thing to strengthen, moisturize and keep our tresses looking it's optimum. And the beauty in doing this is that many of the ways to do this are right in our kitchen cupboards. From Apple Cider Vinegar, Baking Soda, Honey and now Tea, there are many ways to strengthen, moisturize and even combat issues of dandruff, dry scalp and hair loss that are inexpensive and safe and definitely O'Natural. So, without further ado..let's get into some Tea talk for hair.

TEA..The Benefits for hair;
  • Caffeine: Many teas carry caffeine, which can stimulate hair growth when used in tiny amounts. This can be a double edged sword, whereas too much can , caffeine that is, can stunt hair growth (mostly black tea). So please be sure to use the ratio 0.001% to water. Since Black Tea contain the highest amount of caffeine, take extra precaution when using these as tea rinses.
  • Shine: Tea rinses can add shine to your hair
  • Breakage: Decreases hair breakage due to it's strengthening effects and it blocks DHT from causing the hair to break.
  • Hair Loss: Green Tea is wonderful for combating hair loss due to it containing EGCG. The Saitama study reports that green tea inhibits the production of Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF), a molecule that has been linked to cancer, arthritis and hair loss. In the Seoul study, hair follicles were treated with EGCG in a lab setting. Test cultures showed increased hair growth and hair follicle elongation when compared to control cultures. A green tea tincture containing 10 percent EGCG was also applied to the scalps of human volunteers, yielding the same results.
  • Scalp Issues: Green Tea has been known to soothe and reduce inflammation in issues of dandruff and psoriasis affected scalps.  (When looking for shampoos or conditioners containing Green Tea, be sure that the tea is in the top part of the ingredients and are free of sulfates, parabens and other harsh ingredients that will continue to irritate the scalp). Steeping fresh Rosemary has also been known to stimulate the scalp, prevent hair loss and help to regrow hair. Nettle will also help prevent and treat dandruff and stimulate circulation in the scalp. Excellent for use during winter.

TEA RINSES..How To Use:
  • Brew a cup of herbal tea.
  • Cool the tea down to lukewarm temperature.
  • Apply the tea using either a color applicator bottle, to the scalp or using a spray bottle and leave on anywhere from 5-30 minutes, each persons results will vary so there is no direct way to tell how long to leave on. Massage scalp.
  • Shampoo or Co-Wash as usual.
  • You can also leave your tea rinse in after you have shampooed or co-washed your hair.

TEA RINSES..A Word of Caution
  • Those who have light colored hair should take precaution when using dark teas, as they can stain the hair.
  • Black Tea contain the highest amount of caffeine, so take precaution when using.

Product Review: Henna Sooq COCOVEDA HAIR OIL

Hola Chicas/Chicos..I pray all is well with everyone.

Ok, so it's time for another product review...And it's on an Ayurvedic product by Henna Sooq called Cocoveda..I picked up this product while in Atlanta at the World Natural Hair Show and I will fill you in on whether my hair (whose name is Beatrice) thought it was a hit or miss.

What is Cocoveda?
  • It's an oil similar to Vatika Oil in that it has a coconut oil base and incorporates Indian Ayurvedic (plant based) beneficial herbs.

How To Use Cocoveda:

  • Deep Conditioning: To do this, just apply onto your hair, in a quantity that is needed for your hair length, and rub thoroughly into your hair and scalp. This promotes further blood circulation. Put a shower cap over your hair, and leave on for about one hour. Rinse out when finished.
  • Post Washing: Apply onto hair after washing. Rub the oil through the hair and massage into scalp to promote blood circulation.

What It Claims:
  • Brings forth a natural shine and rejuvenates dry and damaged hair.
  • Adds shine and bounce to your hair
  • Streghten the hair shaft, reduce split ends and hair breakage.

Ingredients:
  • Coconut Oil: strengthens the hair shaft, reducing split ends, and hair breakage.
  • Henna: this was added because the henna plant is known for strenghtening the hair, and conditioning it.
  • Shikakai: we added this herb because it is known for promoting hair growth
  • Neem: relives dry, itchy scalp. It is widely used in ayurvedic hair oils. It is used to treat the symptoms of scalp psoriasis. It gives you shiny, silky, stronger hair and encourages growth.
  • Amla: this herb also is known for promoting hair growth, and thickening hair. It is also known to prevent premature greying
  • Methi (fenugreek): known to reduce hair loss, and thinning. Treats dandruff.
  • Bhringraj: we added this herb to improve the condition of the hair, quality of the hair color, and for healthy scalp and hair.
  • Brahmi: used to improve hair growth, and is known to be a memory enhancer.
  • Nagarmotha: it works on the hair root, and stimulates it. It is used to treat scalp disorders.
  • Ginger: is considered one of the most powerful herbs in ayurveda. It has very potent stimulating properties, and increases blood circulation to your scalp will which result in faster growing hair.
  • Hibiscus:a very popular addition to ayurvedic hair care, it contains an abundant amount of astringent properties that are ideal for oily hair. It also soothes eczema, and dry scalp conditions.

My personal Review:

Well, first, let me talk about the smell..It's definitely not overwhelming, but it smells very clean. It reminds me of the bubbles that I buy for my children with a hint of coconut oil..I'm not one who's into synthetic fragrances so this is great for me. Now, on to the results..I must say that I absolutely love it!!! I love the texture and consistency. I love the way that it made my hair feel after I used it with my conditioner. I would like to use it as my deep conditioner alone, but it's only 100 ml, which is not much for my thick hair, so I mixed it with my SheaMoisture Deep Treatment Masque. Being that I am a huge fan of Ayurvedic herbs, this is definitely a huge plus for me. I love love love the ingredients and the fact that it is 100% all natural, I'm like a kid in the candy store..I would highly recommend to incorporate this into your hair care regimen, which I have just begin doing. Because coconut oil works best on wet or damp hair, I have been using the oil for my scalp massages once I co wash or dampen my hair.

My Results:

Have a Happy Henna Sooq Day!

Let's Talk Ayurvedic for HEALTHY HAIR

Greetings Ladies and Gents..I pray all is well with everyone.
So here's a topic that I'm striving to become more versed in...Ayurvedic living. I'm in the process, as we speak, of growing an organic vegetable and herb garden to aid in my journey of Ayurvedic living (I'm open for gardening tips..please).

Now, my hair thrives most when I practice an Ayurvedic regimen where I incorporate plant based ingredients into my haircare. Ayurvedic products include natural herbs and oils that help to thicken and strengthen the hair, stop excessive shedding and breakage.  So, below, I am going to list some wonderful items that can aid each of us in our journey of O'Natural for healthy hair and scalp.

Ayurveda 101..Healthy Ingredients for Healthy Hair
  • Scalp Massage: I can't stress enough the benefit of massaging the scalp for healthy hair growth. Scalp massages help stimulate the scalp which in turn promote healthy hair growth. An additional ingredient to add to your scalp massages is Peppermint Oil, ..Just add a few drops to your favorite carrier oil and massage away. Scalp can be done as much as daily or a minimum of 4-5 times per week. Be sure to use, only, the balls of your fingertips and never using your fingernails, which creates tiny cuts on the scalp.
  • Henna: Henna is a wonderful plant based powder that carries the benefit of strengthening, conditioning and, in some cases, naturally dyeing the hair.
  • Bhringaraj: Nourishes hair and scalp w/essential nutrients necessary for healthy hair growth. It treats hair loss, premature graying and acts as a conditioner. I purchase this oil from my local Indian grocer.

Let's Talk Ayurvedic Health..Have You Had Your CHAI TEA Today??

Greetings, my lovely naturals..now I'm sure that since your journey to O'Natural many of you have heard the term Ayurveda. Ayurveda is a system of traditional medicine. It's based on centuries of experience in medical practice, handed down through generations. It is regarded as 'The Science of Life' and the practice involves the care of physical, spiritual and mental health of humans. The time honored, well tested ancient formulas of Ayurvedic medicines use natural herbs, minerals and even gems to cure disease and promote immunity minus deadly experiments on testing animals.

Whew..now that that's done..let's look at some of the ways that you can incorporate Ayurveda into your lifestyle to promote healing for your mind, body and spirit.
    • Healthy Hair: I have noticed that my has thrived now that I incorporate an Ayurvedic regimen into my hair care routine. My hair is fuller, stronger and overall healthier.
    • Healthy Body and Mind: I must admit, I am not very versed in yoga, but I have witnessed the power of ease it brings to a person's overall energy. I am in the beginning stages of learning and truly putting into practice the spiritual art of meditation. I have a hard time relaxing and even when I am so called 'resting', I have a lot of noise and constant thoughts in my head. It's definitely much harder than I thought, but excellent exercise for the mind. Massages, using herbal oils or herbal creams are also a part of Ayurvedic healing. It releases toxins and impurities. It's also great for unblocking energy chakras. And we all love a nice massage. There are many other physical remedies that are part of the healthy healing for our bodies using Ayurvedic treatments.
    • Healthy Internal: Ayurvedic health include fresh herbs and spices, herbal teas, and whole, fresh, organic, in season local foods. It includes incorporating all six tastes at every meal: sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent and astringent.
So, this brings me to the wonderful, soothing herbal goodness, Chai Tea. I first had the pleasure of tasting this goodness served over ice at a Thai restaurant. It was so yummy. So last year, I visited a local Indian Grocery store and I ran across a box of Chai Tea, and I was super excited.

So, exactly what is Chai Tea?? Chai Tea is a combination of herbs with tea and milk (I use almond milk). Most Chai Tea contains the herbs cardamom, black pepper corns, fennel, ginger, cinnamon, or cloves. All healthy delicious spices. And although the tea contains these spices, they do not overpower the tea and honestly, it is the most delicious tea that I've ever tasted...EVER! So now that I've drooled over how delicious it is, let me fill you in on the wonderful benefits.

    Chai Tea and it's benefits:
    • Boosts Immune System
    • Helps to lower blood pressure and cholesterol
    • Helps to ease nausea and diarrhea
    • The clove, which is an antifungal, added to the tea is known to help with colds and flu
    • The cardamom is a digestive aid and is helpful with indigestion. It improves metabolism, helps with impotence, helps with depression and oral disorders.Cardamom also stimulates the mind and promotes clarity.
    • The nutmeg is known to help with mucous membrane
    • The ginger in the tea is known to stregthen and heal the respiratory and digestive system
    • The pepper has both antibacterial and antioxidant properties. It prevents gas and improves digestion. It also improves blood circulation. It induces sweating which cools down the body, therefore reducing fever.
    • And don't fret about the natural caffeine, three cups of Chai Tea is the equivalent to 1 cup of coffee.
Just Brew your water as usual and steep your Chai Tea for at least 5 minutes. Add milk and sweeten (I use honey or Agave Nectar) and enjoy.

Chai Tea can be purchased at any health food store or local Indian Grocery Store.
